Decorating with Rugs
You probably cannot explain exactly what you like or what you are looking
for when you are decorating your home. You will just know it when you
see it! And your rug selection can pull all of the design elements
of a room together.
If you are starting your decorating project from scratch, you will
set the tone and design of the room by selecting a pattern carpet.
Area rugs are a great way to introduce colours into your home. You can pick a patterned area rug and decorate your whole room around it. Pull out a couple of the colours in the rug and make them your wall colour and furniture colours. The rule of good balance is no more than 3 colours in a room. Any more and it is too busy and the eye does not know what to look at.
If you are redecorating, take a swatch of the most visible pattern
in the room to the carpet store. Using only color as a consideration,
match the swatch to samples of patterned carpet, then choose your favorite.
Always choose the flooring first, and then plan the paint, furnishing,
fabrics & accessories around the floor. The colors of the rug do
not need to be the same as the curtains or upholstery, they should
just echo those colours in some way, and be in the same range of primary
colours or earth tones. For example, if your drapes are blue, your
rug does not have to be blue, but small accents of that color would
complement the drapes. Lighter rugs will increase the perceived size
of the room while darker rugs will create a warmer, intimate decorum.
Carpets that have an open field are usually preferred in situations
where a dining or coffee table would sit right over the medallion.
In these rugs, most of the visual interest is in the borders. For a
dining room rug, measure your table top. Add four feet to the width
and length to find the minimum size of your dining room rug. This extra
length and width will allow the chairs to be pulled out from under
the table.
When using area rugs in a living room make sure that at least the front feet of the sofa and chairs are on the rug. This will ground the area and make it look pulled together. If the feet of the furniture are not resting on the rug the rug will appear too small for the area.
To place a room - sized rug on a hardwood floor, choose a rug
which allows eight inches of wood to be exposed around the rug's
perimeter. For cozy nooks in large rooms, create small sitting areas
by gathering furniture around a 4' x 6' or a 5' x
8' rug. A sitting area could have a lighter more fragile pattern.
You can brighten up small areas, like your foyer, bathroom or kitchen,
with an accent rug using a 3' x 5', 4' x 6',
or a 6' Round Rug.
The most important thing to remember is that there are no rules! Just
be pleased with the look and quality of the area rug you choose. Try
and imagine the total look of the room or space you are creating, and
remember what the area will be used for. Have fun!
